The piece was commissioned in response to a student competition to design a centrepiece sculpture for a new student union building, the Forum, at the Univestity of Hertfordshire’s Hatfield Campus. I was approached with the brief to co-ordinate to fabrication for a relatively inexperienced designer, Amy Beckett with a very conservative client, Wilmott Dixon Construction.
I was able to take the Artists original sketches through to a 1/4 scale model. We were then able to begin fabrication for the final piece which was to hang in an extremely weight sensitive location above the heads of 100+ diners. I was able to design a lightweight spigotted aluminium sub-frame which carried a wooden exterior. This was CNC manufactured, assembled and finished to a high standard in house.
